NSFW: Goodbye Lusty Lady for San Francisco Bay Guardian

San Francisco is a little less weird now.  Sadly, the venerable North Beach peep show, the Lusty Lady, was forced to shut their doors last week when their landlord refused to renew their lease after years of drastic rent increases.  The Lusty  was not your average strip club.  It was actually a peep show (put a dollar in the machine, window goes up, and on the other side of the glass are the performers), but more importantly,  it was the worlds ONLY unionized, cooperative establishment of this type and the performers were a far cry from the cookie-cutter dancers that one may come to expect at your typical nude review.  The Lusties came in all shapes, sizes, and styles and were an asset to San Francisco’s pro-worker, sex-positive, counter-culture.

I had the opportunity to get behind the scenes a few days before the closure to document the Lusty one last time for the San Francisco Bay Guardian.  It was a rare privilege and a bittersweet experience.

“You might call the loss of the Lusty another nail in the coffin for San Francisco’s famously freakish wild side, an element that feels thinner with each passing day.”
